There are permit-holders' parking spaces about 100 metres south of Gateway school on the east side of High Street, Great Missenden for which I am a permit holder. Bearing in mind the parked cars, the usable road at this point is of just the "wrong" width; neither wide enough for two cars to pass comfortably nor too narrow to force cars in one direction or the other to stop and wait. The result is a constant battle with vehicles trying to squeeze past each other through a barely sufficient width; the road is a wing mirror graveyard. Worse, residents’ parked cars are damaged by swerving vehicles on a regular basis; my vehicle has been damaged 7 times, the last occasion in December 2018 when it was hit so hard it had to be written off. My wife’s car has also suffered damage, and I’m sure other residents would say the same. However, the greatest concern is regarding impatient drivers - usually in vans or lorries. They head north out of Great Missenden and because they are too wide to get through without waiting they simply mount the kerb and drive up the pavement, almost always without slowing down. When these incidents occur most frequently is when the road is busy with parents collecting children from Gateway school. A further risk is that houses on the side of the road these vans use have little or no front garden and open directly onto the pavement. I work at home 2 or 3 days a week and see this happening almost every day, sometimes more than once a day. While I accept that I have an interest in protecting my property from damage, I do think there is a real accident risk which needs to be investigated and (hopefully) managed – perhaps by widening the road (the eastern pavement is unnecessarily wide) or using traffic-calming measures similar to those used elsewhere in Great Missenden.
