Dangerous surface
Reported in the Road surface category anonymously at 11:28, Mon 5 August 2019
Sent to Buckinghamshire Council 2 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1720273.
The road is highly dangerous for cyclists due to an irresponsible council choosing to create a “skating rink” of loose gravel by dint of their chosen method or resurfacing. This also applies to large sections of Vale Road Chesham! In 2019 this is totally unacceptable. Creating a loose unstable surface that specifically endangers cyclists (and to a smaller extent motorists) is outrageous, irresponsible, and simply “not on”! Warning signs do not protect anyone on a bike, and motorists don't slow down anyway. What exactly do you want cyclists to do? Should they try and “pick out” the thinner sections of loose material? How would they know how deep the gravel is that they are riding on? Should they turn around and do a lengthy detour… only to find that the detour may be equally dangerous? Ricochetting stones from cars and easily injure a cyclist. Heavy road surfaces = higher petrol consumption. This policy is irresponsible and not thought through. It is clear that you have better and safer alternative methods of resurfacing. Bryant’s Bottom road is a good example of good quality safe repair. REPEAT the Bryant’s Bottom road is a good example of good quality safe repair. There is no need for you to endanger cyclists with loose surface dressing. In fact it's better to leave a road UNREPAIRED than to resurface in this manner. It confounds me how you can come to the conclusion that leaving a road like a skating rink is OK. Could you please confirm that you will call an end to loose surface dressing. There is no justification, and IT'S DANGEROUS! I am trusting that you will challenge yourselves and have the integrity and good grace to “put your hands up” and admit that this is not ideal, and that you will in future use the “black silk tarmac” finish that graces the Bryant’s Bottom road.
