Constant flooding from road , drains and grips blocked

Reported via desktop in the Ditch issue category anonymously at 09:17, Thu 30 September 2021

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council less than a minute later

The installed drain on east side of road has been blocked since installation, the grips ( 7 off) on the west side have to take most of the water from the steep road leading up to the top of the Hale woods so we see a lot of soil and stones washed down as no drains exist on the hill. Recently hedge trimming took place and deposited much of the soil dug out ( by me) back into the grips blocking their use. I have tried to clear a minimum to avoid flooding of properties but it needs proper clearing before a heavy rainfall. 2 years ago these were blocked and my house, even though raised significantly from the road, was flooded at significant cost. I do not want to see this happen again due to poor drains maintenance

  • Hi this problem continues, the area engineer did visit, agreed it was a problem that needed resolving, ie banks reduced in height, grips cleared and blocked drains resolved. It was going to be addressed soon and an annual revisit put in place but not as an emergency. As he said " you shouldn't need to be out clearing the gullies and grips at all , we will get a solution in place where this is managed". FOUR months later no further updates or actions and I have been forced twice already to resume clearing the blocks to keep the road and driveways from flooding. Can you confirm when you will action or should I start billing the council for my efforts?

  • For attention of area engineer. Yet again i have had to clear 4 of the 9 grips along this road to save it from flooding due to no drainage on the hill and poor maintenance which i was assured would be addressed in oct 2022. The height of the subsequent banks is now 4ft+ and with the nettles blocking the grips its 7ft. This was agreed as a point of action to dig them out fully and then put an annual maintenance schedule in , yet i am still forced to do this job to avoid potential property flooding. Note as clarified before if my property is subject to flooding again, I will sue the council for any all costs due to your inaction and lack of care. Please contact me with regards the agreed team to come and resolve the grip blocks and drain clearance , attached two photos, one grip i have cleared , one not maintained.

  • Limited action to reduce flooding, partial clearance of the drain but banks and debris still high. Realised that council workers ( contractors Irvine) have arrived and expect to be working here for 2 weeks, BUT not on the issues but helping clear 500m of bridleway for horses, Unbelievable , who do i need to know or contact to get some action?

  • Council , action or communication is needed. Today a short shower led to this much debris coming down the road blocking the grips, yet again i had to go out and clear them to ensure the road did not remain flooded and a danger for cyclists and pedestrians. The council drain, recently cleaned is as we suggested blocked again, see spade standing in water to 12inch depth. Action needed before winter arrives and we have serious problem with flooding at this point.
